Kisumu County embarks on Automation of bursary fund as shs 205M disbursed

The County Government of Kisumu has also embarked on automation of the bursary management process in the entire county.

Kisumu Governor Prof Peter Anyang Nyong’o says this is part of the wider plan that seeks to digitize and automate all county processes, procedures and systems.

Addressing the media today in Kisumu after launching the disbursement of the last tranche of the education bursary and scholarship for the financial year 2020/2021, Nyong’o says this initiative once completed, will enhance efficiency and effectiveness in the bursary management process.

He says the system will weed out the issue of writing cheques which may end up even benefitting unscrupulous people.

He says a total of shs 44,276,774 has today been disbursed to the successful applicants for the education Bursary.

“In December 2020, we gave out Ksh 68, 462,826. In March, this year, we gave out Ksh 47,260,400, while last month, we assembled here to distribute Ksh 45 m to help give hope to our students,” Nyong’o says.

The Governor says County Government of Kisumu has thanked partners who have played a key role though similar bursaries and scholarship thus ensuring access to quality education within the County at secondary, colleges and university levels within Kisumu County.

“These partners include; Family Bank, Equity Bank through the Wings to Fly program, Co-operative Bank of Kenya, KCB Foundation and Palm House Foundation, among others,” Nyong’o adds.

The Governor has appealed to all the students who will be getting the bursaries to study hard, pass their examinations and fulfil their career dreams, adding that this is the best way to pay back the tax payers.

“I wish to assure our people that the selection of the beneficiaries has been above board. Committees and panels have been set up deep into the ward levels to carefully and professionally pick needy and vulnerable applicants from Kisumu County who are in secondary, universities, driving schools and other colleges,” Nyong’o further says.

He further says the number of beneficiaries in the 205 million kitty is as follows: Secondary Schools and Special institutions 20,021 students, Universities 2,348 Students. Tertiary Colleges and Driving Schools 4,608 students, Scholarships 1,260 students. This brings to 28,237 students the total number of students who have benefited from the bursaries and scholarships in the 2020/2021 Financial year.
