South East Nyakach ward residents accept two village units but want 4 others.

RESIDENTS of South East Nyakach ward have accepted a proposal of establishing two village units per ward in Kisumu County but was quick to say that their ward need between four to six village units that is to be established by the County Government of Kisumu.

Speaking today at Kodong’a Hall in South East Nyakach ward, the residents said the proposal of establishing two village units per ward is okay but bigger wards like south east Nyakach should have more village units to be administered by village administrators.

Hezekiah Ogutu Okello says according to the topography of south East Nyakach, the ward needs four village units due to its vastness and population.

He proposed that the four should be greater Sigoti, South East Nyakach, the great South Nyakach and
“One of the village unit we need apart from the proposed two should be South Nyakach which comprise of the greater Kadiang’a kamnwa, Kodul and koboko in Kabete which is about 11 kilometers and has a population of about 90,000 people,” Ogutu said.

Oguk Gari from Koguta area said they are not ready for two village units in the South East Nyakach Ward, adding it should be reviewed before it is implemented.

Other residents were also of the similar opinion that the two village units are not enough for the vast ward but later agree that they should grab the two opportunities with a proposal that they need for more village units within the ward.

Area Member of County Assembly Johnson Guya after deliberations agreed with the residents that they have accepted the two village units namely Sigoti and South Nyakach but still demand four morein the near future.

“Should we be given two village units, we will name them Sigoti and South Nyakach but if we are given four village units then they will be named as Ramogi, Koguta, South East Nyakach and South Nyakach while if the fifth one is given it will be named Agai or Sondu Village Unit,” Guya said.

Guya assured the residents that the document will be brought before the county Assembly of Kisumu for approval before the village units are formed under Kisumu County Administration {Village Units} Act, 2019 which has since been gazetted.

The residents finally settled on the two village units namely Sigoti and South Nyakach for a start.
The Director of Administration Haggai Kadiri also agreed and noted down that the proposal of having four village units for the South East Nyakach ward is a real concern and said he will take the proposal to the committee dealing with the issue of establishing the village units in Kisumu County.

He urged the residents to have the two proposed village units for a start of the new administrative units within the village under the county Government of Kisumu.

“It is good you start by this two village units as you have agreed but we will also consider what you have proposed by wanting to have four village units within the ward,” Kadiri said.

He said he is happy with the proposals given by the various residents of the wards his team has visited for the purposes of getting the views of the public on the issue of establishing village units in Kisumu County.

“We will consider the various proposals on the issue of establishing the village units but let us start from somewhere so that we can move on. This is because our Governor is really concerned with the issue of forming the village councils and village administration which is meant to bring devolution closer to the people.

So far the County Government of Kisumu through the office of the Director of Administration has held public participation forum in 11 wards on the issue of getting their views on establishment of the village units.
