TWO Kenyan lobby groups in the United States of America has
donated cash worth over 300,000 kenya shillings that has helped in purchasing
food items to the victims of the raging floods that has been witnessed in
Nyando constituency and other parts of Kisumu county.
The Groups known as Kano Empowerment Association {KEA USA}
led by its Secretary General Dr. George Anyumba and its Board Chairman Zacharia
Apela teaming up with Kavirondo Men’s Group through its chairman Joab Okello
and it Secretary General Enos Odera has donated an estimated shs 500,000 which
has been used to purchase foodstuff to the people who have been affected by the
flood in Nyando.
The funds have been channeled through Apuoyo Biggy
Foundation in Kisumu which has engaged in the purchase and the distribution of
the items.
In a press statement sent to newsrooms, Kano Empowerment
Association {KEA USA} led by its Secretary General Dr. George Anyumba and its
Board Chairman Zacharia Apela said they have been really touched by the plight
of their people back at home who have been seriously ravaged by the flood
caused as a result of the heavy downpour being witnessed in various parts of
Kisumu County and Kenya in General.
They say the flood menace in Kano and other parts of Kisumu
county needs a permanent solution, adding that the residents should not keep on
suffering yet a permanent solution can be found towards the menace once and for
all.
“Our people can’t keep on suffering due to flood menace
since independence yet a lasting solution to this problem can be found. We need
a serious dialogue on how to tackle it once and for all,” they say.
The duo at the same time has encouraged the members of the
Luo community both in Kenya and abroad to work together for the development of
the greater Nyanza region, adding that there is need to re-think on the
survival of the community.
They have also challenged the elected Governors in Nyanza
region who are currently serving their terms to ensure that there are
meaningful development in their counties, adding that so far there is nothing
tangible to show for Devolution since its inception in the year 2013.
“Nyanza region has nothing to show for devolution and
members of the Luo community in diaspora are really disturbed by the lackluster
performance of our Governors and elected leaders,” they add.
Coordinator who has been in charge of the distribution of
the food Item Silas Odhiambo Aka Apuoyo Biggy says by the end of their four
days in in distributing the items, more 2,000 people will be reached.
He says nearly 10,000 people have been affected as a
result of the floods within Kisumu County, adding that more well-wishers should
come to the aid of the victims of the flood in various parts of the country.
He says they are targeting more than 20 evacuation centers
where the flood victims are currently camping after being displaced from their
homes.
ENDS:
This is a good example of how we should support one another in times of need like now. Thanks to Dr Onyango Anyumba and team for the initiative.
ReplyDeleteI strongly believe that we have to seriously consider our priorities as a community, let us use the current lockdown to reflect on how as a community we need to chart our destiny and forge a United front towards tackling our perennial problems. It is disheartening to sit and watch as the community continues to suffer myriad of problems ranging from runaway unemployment amongst the youth, lack basic medical facilities, poor educational infrastructure, poor farming and agricultural methods and technology whereas we constantly receive sickening rhetorics from our political leaders year in year out. Nobody seems to realise that through devolution the community can utilise the funds and opportunity to change their plight, instead the radar less political leadership use the opportunity and the resources to loot and enrich themselves together with their cronies. This has to stop. Thank you Dr. Anyumba and co,we can do more. God bless
