Mwangaza set to manage the streets lighting in Kisumu City, Ombara says.

THE CITY Management of Kisumu is seeking the services of a private company to help in managing the streets lighting within Kisumu City.

Kisumu City Manager Doris Ombara says the project of lighting up the city has taken an estimated cost of 10 million hence needs to be properly managed.

Addressing the press at her office in Kisumu, Ombara says the issue of vandalism of the street lights as well as the power surge emanating from power blackout are some of the reasons making the management of City of Kisumu to hire the services of a private company to help in managing the street lighting.

Ombara says for the first eight months after street lighting in Kisumu City put in place, was very much okay and thereafter the issue of vandalism cropped in hence the need to properly manage it through a private company, adding that it has identified Mwangaza to do this job.

The City Manager says the City Management is spending close to about 2 million in doing the repair and replacement of lights due to vandalism, power surge and replacing the major parts of the street lighting.

“The city has started deeming out in terms of its lights which has been caused by vandalism and power surge and this is why we want it managed by a private company which we believe will do this work of managing the street lighting in Kisumu City,” Ombara says.

Ombara has urged the public to be on the lookout and report those who are engaging in vandalism as well as other vices which undermines the street lighting in Kisumu City.

She says the company will work from 6:00pm to late night so as to help in checking the street lighting while doing the maintenance.

“Posting things about Kisumu City getting dark on face book won’t help and the public should help us by arresting those who are engaged in acts of vandalism and call us,” Ombara adds.

She says the City will engage the company on a contract basis to do the job within Kisumu City.
Ombara adds that the issue of illegal connection especially in the informal settlements is very worrying because in causing fires within those areas.
