Kisumu Traders support the return of containers at reduced fees of 5,000

A SECTION of Traders in Kisumu within the Central Business District have supported the move to return the business containers that were demolished about three weeks ago after a disagreement occurred among the  traders themselves and the County Government of Kisumu.

The traders who have addressed the press opposite Telkom Plaza today where some containers were demolished and property of unknown value destroyed by the Management of Kisumu City being supervised through the office of the City Manager, said they have welcomed the move.

The traders claim that some powerful cartels and some political leaders are playing ping pong games with them by wanting the fees charged per month capped at shs 10,000, a move they say will resist at all cost.

They add that the investor in the containers has agreed to reduce the amount from the initial shs 10,000 to shs 5,000 per month for those whom the containers will be leased to for doing businesses.

Led by Charles Ooko Aketch, the traders say it is high time the stalemate of bringing the containers be resolved once and for all so that they settle for their various businesses.

“We have really lost in terms of the business since the demolished occurred as from March last year when the Corona Virus pandemic was declared. A number of us have really suffered with no means of survival with our families and if this investor on the issue of containers has agreed to reduce the prizes from shs 10,000 to shs 5,000 on a monthly basis then this is a good move at all,” they say.

The traders now want elected MCAs especially the one for Market/Mlimani ward Seth Ochieng Kanga to fully support the move so that they get their means of livelihoods within the Central Business District.

“The small scale businesses have really suffered as a result of demolition and we urge the County Government not to continue with such like a thing, they add.

They want all those who have greater interest as far as the issue of erecting the containers in Kisumu is concerned.

The traders move come barely a few weeks after traders forced the City Management of Kisumu to pull some containers which were brought within the CDB at night along Akamba Lane together with those that were earlier erected opposite Telkom Plaza while arguing that there were no proper channel followed when doing so.

They urge Investor in the Container Business to ensure that they are erected during the day and not night hours so as not to raise suspicion.
