Two Organizations
have partnered to help in tackling the cases of Malaria within the Kenyan Nile
Basin.
The two
Organizations namely Community and Media Empowerment Initiative in Kisumu {CEMI-K},
Kenya and the Kenya Nile Discourse Forum say Malaria disease still remain a
major health and social problem within the Kenyan Nile Basin.
Speaking in
Kisumu during a workshop on tackling Malaria within the Kenyan Basin while
rejuvenating the Kenya Nile Discourse Forum {KNDF}, Community and Media
Empowerment Initiative in Kisumu {CEMI-K}, Kenya Programs Manager Bernard Okebe
said they are also coordinating issues of environmental conservation alongside
tackling Malaria within the said basin.
He says his
organization will coordinate with that of KNDF and will focus on Malaria as a
major public challenge within the Kenyan Nile Basin.
In charge
of Malaria Control in Kisumu County Lilyana Dayo says nationally, the
percentage of those attacked by Malaria is 6 percent while in the Lake Victoria
Basin, it is 19 percent.
She says
Coast Region has five percent, adding that one of the interventions the
Government has applied is the mass distribution of bed nets with the Lake Basin
region as well as other regions.
She suggests
that the Government should heavily invest on malaria control within the Lake
Basin and Coast regions, adding that there are still high transmissions of
malaria diseases in the two areas.
This year’s
World Malaria Day will be marked this April 25 with a theme of Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite."
This theme emphasizes the need for
increased investment, innovative solutions, and renewed commitment to combat
malaria. It's a call to action for all to re-energize efforts at all
levels, from global policy to community action, to accelerate progress towards
malaria elimination.
