Flash floods in parts
of Nyando sub county as KCPE Kicks off.
This year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education {KCPE}
exams kicked off this morning in Kisumu County without major hitch but flash
flood has been witnessed in parts of the county.
A number of schools within Nyando Sub County especially
those in Kabonyo/Kanyagwal Ward have experienced floods due to heavy rains
pounding the area as the Class eight final exams kicked off this morning.
In schools like Bwanda, Kasang’any and Korwana Primary
schools in Nyando Sub County, exams officials had rough time reaching the
examination centers as they had to wade through flooded area to arrive in the
schools to administer exams.
An armature video which has since gone viral in the social
media reveals that some security officers manning exams had to bear with the
situation to escort the exams papers as they literally walked in the flooded
area to the schools.
A head teacher who is now working as a center manager in one
of the schools where the exams are being administered and spoke to the media on
condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to talk to the press said
the situation is bad indeed as they had to risk taking exams to the schools
because the flood menace is real.
The teacher says the area actually qualifies to be a
hardship area and teachers deserve to get hardship allowance just like those
their colleagues working in Muhoroni and Nyakach Sub Counties.
“We are in a dire need of help during this time of
conducting KCPE exams within our schools in Nyang’ande zone within Nyando Sub
County because of the current situation of floods that have been caused as a
result of heavy downpour,” he says.
He adds that if the heavy rains continue to ponder the area
then the situation will become worse.
Efforts to get comments from Kisumu County Director of
Education Isaac Atebe bore no fruit as he promised to call back the press to
confirm the situation.
The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams kicked off
this morning countrywide and will officially come to an end this Thursday
October 29 after the Candidates write their last exam paper which is Social
studies.
