National Government kicks off construction of international stadium at Kisumu’s ASK Ground

The National Government has embarked on the construction of a state-of art international stadium within Kisumu’s Agricultural Society of Kenya Show ground at Mamboleo.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ambassador Amina Mohamed said the ground is set to be an international stadium with a capacity of more 20,000 people.

The Stadium will be known as Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium.

Addressing the press in Kisumu today during the ground breaking ceremony, Amina said already some funds from the sports fund has been allocated for the project.

The Sports and Culture Cabinet Secretary says more funds will be sourced from the National Treasury, adding that the cost of the project is estimated to be shs 350 million.

Amina says the project is expected to be completed within six months from the time of the ground breaking ceremony.
She says this project has been a directive from President Uhuru Kenyatta after the handshake between him and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

“We are really hopeful that within six months, we should be able to complete this project in Kisumu,” Amina says.

The Cabinet Secretary says the Stadium will serve members of the Lake Region Economic Block {LREB} that comprised of 14 counties.

She says the project will have a greater economic importance hence the public should take advantage of it.

Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang Nyong’o who attended the event said it is a good project which should be embraced fully because of its immense economic benefits.

Nyong’o adds that Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground has been renamed Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports ground and will be refurbished.

He says the facilities at the sports ground will be rehabilitated, adding that it will be modernized with good facilities.

Nyong’o says this will be done through World Bank under the Kenya Urban Support program.

Nyong’o further says the County Government of Kisumu has a greater plan to rehabilitate the Moi Stadium in Kisumu soon.
