Professionals from Kano told to unite for development

VARIOUS professionals from the greater Kano area in Kisumu County have been urged to fully unite and help in championing development projects within the area.

Former East African Law Society President James Aggrey Mwamu says it is high time the various professionals hailing from Kano area in Kisumu County to come together and forge ahead development to the residents.

Addressing the press in Kisumu after meeting with various professionals from Kano area, Mwamu said the issue of privatization of state-owned sugar millers within Nyando Sugar belt should be discussed and professionals should be engaged and their view sought before such a process takes place.

He says the professionals can chart way forward towards the privatization process of Miwani, Chemelil and Muhoroni Sugar Factories in Kisumu County.

Mwamu says other than the long term process of controlling floods through the yet to be constructed multi-billion Koru-Soin Dam in Kisumu County, the professionals should come up with short term measures in controlling the perennial floods that normally hit most parts of Kano area during the long rainy seasons.

He says there should be a proper coordination between the professionals, County Government of Kisumu and the National Government to ensure that the issue of cotton farming is fully revived in Kano area to benefit the residents.

Mwamu says the standard of education in most public schools within Kano area should be improved as well as their infrastructure.

He called on the professionals to also think about on how to make places like Nam Thowi next to Lake Victoria a productive area for growing cereals and other horticultural crops for sale.

“Our people should be empowered to begin growing of crops like cotton as it used to be in early 70s and 80s,” Mwamu says

Mwamu says time for politics is not now and politicians should engage the public to have meaningful activities that can help to uplift their standard of living especially at this time when the country is facing economic meltdown.
