Community trained on communicating on flood
risks
A section
of residents of Kakmie Sub-Location in Nyando have been trained on issues of
Communicating flooding risks to help in Mitigating effects that may be caused
by floods as a result of heavy rains that have been witnessed during this year’s
long rainy season.
The more
than 20 community members drawn within the said Sub-Location have received such
training from a Community Based Organization known as Community Empowerment and
Media Initiative in Kisumu {CEMI-K}.
Community
Empowerment and Media Initiative in Kisumu{CEMI-K} Director Bernard Okebe says
areas like Nyando, Nyakach, Nyatike and Budalangi have been experiencing floods
caused by heavy rains hence the aspect of communicating early warnings to the
community on flooding risks is very important indeed.
He says the
reason as to why communication is done is to issue alerts on the issue of
Floods.
Okebe says floods
have a lot of risks that include destruction of crops, Houses and animals being
swept away during floods.
He adds
that infrastructure such as roads especially within the rural areas are also
destroyed when floods occur.
Okebe says
the Community should be able to minimize flooding risks through effective
communication.
“Water can
be a gift and a risk at the same time because it sometimes cause serious
flooding that affects members of the Community hence the issue of early communication
of flood risks is very important to the people living within flood prone areas,”Okebe
says
Okebe has
urged that there should be proper planning on issues of flooding such as
effective communication, calling for establishment of dykes as well as putting
proper drainage ahead of heavy rains.
He says the
Organization will continue to engage the community on the issue of
communicating flooding risks to sensitize them more.
Dominic
Odipo, a facilitator with CEMI-K says there is need for a multi-disciplinary
approach in communicating flooding risks within the community.
Participants
have been in agreement that issues of communicating flooding risks should be
done earlier enough to prepare the community for any risks associated with the
floods.
Shem Ganda
says there is need to work closely with all the stakeholders on issues of
communicating flooding risks.
Recently,
areas within Nyando were affected heavily by floods especially East/Kano
Wawidhi ward and Awasi/Onjiko wards.
The floods
have been caused by heavy rains that have been witnessed as a result of long
rains that began in April and extended to May this year.
