Residents next to Ahero Interchange want rumble strips re-designed to avoid excess noise

The Residents of Kochogo North Sub-Location along the Ahero Interchange in Nyando Constituency have appealed to the Kenya National Highways Authority to consider re-designing of the rumbles strips to avoid what they have termed as excessive noise.

The residents claim that the rumbles strips installed on the Ahero Interchange road leading from Ahero-Kisii Highway cause excessive noise and vibrations hence need to be re-designed with immediate effect.

The area residents say that they had lodged a complaint with the office of the Nyanza Regional Director of Kenya National Highways Authority through a letter dated March 18,2025 and there is no response from the Authority despite receiving and acknowledging the letter on March 24,2025.

Through the letter written by a resident Maurice Okeyo Okello whose home is adjacent to the Interchange near Onjiko Comprehensive school, the residents claim that since the installation of rumble strips, there has been a significant increase in noise levels from vehicles especially lorries as they pass over them.

“Example to note is the empty cement trucks heading back to the factories or deport after delivering their Cargos. The noise levels emanating from these trucks as they pass the rumble strips are deafening and in most cases and in most cases classes at the nearby Onjiko Comprehensive school are interrupted until the trucks get far away and the noise subsides,” read part of the letter.

They claim that the noise levels is worse at night when it is generally quite all over, adding that it has severely disrupted sleep of the area residents leading to considerable distress, headaches and migraines due to lack of sleep, adding that those with small babies can’t have enough sleep due to the noise constant noise there.

The area residents who have been having rental houses nearby the Interchange also complain of losing several tenants who can’t put up with the noise.

They have now appealed to the Kenya National Highways Authority to immediately conduct an assessment of the situation and take necessary action to correct the problem.

They have suggested a raft of measures that the Authority can take that include re-evaluating the necessity and placement of the rumble strips near the residential areas.

The other thing they have proposed is the implementation of an alternative traffic calming measure that are less intrusive such as signage or speed cameras, several speed bumps that the authority might find appropriate.

They have also proposed compensation for the damages incurred to the persons, organizations and the school due to the vibrations.

They have further proposed the total removal of the rumble strips just as it is with the case of Kakamega Interchange near Mamboleo in Kisumu.
