County Government of Kisumu told to follow International law on Demolition
THE Government of Kisumu led by Prof Anyang Nyong’o has been told to follow the international law while carrying out demolition in Kisumu City and its environs.
Lawyer Ken Amondi says the County Government of Kisumu has been demolishing structures on public land and a number of people have lost their businesses as a result of such demolition done without following provisions in the International law.
Addressing the press in Kisumu in his Message to usher in
the New Year of 2021, Amondi who is an aspiring Member of Parliament for Kisumu
Central Constituency in the year 2022 says such demolitions should be carried
out in accordance to the International law.
He says a section of the International laws requires that before one is evicted and demolition carried out, there should be an alternative resettlement plan to allow those who are affected have an alternative place for their businesses.
Amondi says such victims should be compensated when such demolitions are carried out and interfere with their businesses.
“When people are evicted and their businesses interfered with, then their rights are violated because they can’t afford to get their basic needs and the international law provides that the Government has an alternative place to take the would be victims of such demolitions,” Amondi says.
Amondi at the same time told the County Government of Kisumu to consider pay the pending Bills to those contractors who have been doing businesses with it since 2013, adding that there has been a problem in payment of such bills by a number of county Governments.
He says a number of such suppliers have not been paid for what they supplied to the County Government, adding that this has brought a lot of problems with the banks since the suppliers are unable to pay even the banks where they borrowed loans to do businesses with the County Government.
“A number of contractors have suffered a lot after they have not been paid the money for the work done as they have a lot of problems with the Auctioneers and banks,” he adds.
Amondi says the alleged failure by the County Government to pay a number of such contractors has made money not to circulation, adding that President Kenyatta in the year 2019 ordered counties to pay all those who have been doing businesses with the various county governments within three months as this will allow for the circulation of money at the grass root level.
“As we usher in the year 2021, there is need to pay the contractors within three months after doing businesses with the County Governments,” Amondi further says.
