Government told to Prepare well as schools re-opens next month

THE Government has been told to ensure that there is proper preparations ahead of the nationwide schools re-opening on January 4 next year.

Former President of the East African Law Society James Aggrey Mwamu says it is only two weeks to the re-opening of schools across the country but there is still no proper preparation from the National Government.

Addressing the press after touring a number of schools in Kisumu East Constituency where he donated Covid-19 kits that include hand washing tanks, Face masks and sanitizers through Mwalimu James Japheth Mwamu Foundation, Mwamu says the issue of lack of good preparation from the Government ahead of the re-opening is very worrying.

He says there is still no infrastructure put in place to ensure that when the schools are re-opened children will be safe as far as the issue of Covid-19 is concerned.

“Teachers in a number of schools seems not to be having information whether there are face masks, hand washing water tanks and sanitizers that the government is going to provide,” Mwamu says

Mwamu who is also the President of Mwalimu James Japheth Mwamu Foundation says there are no preparations in terms of extra class rooms that the national Government had promised.

“We still have about two weeks to the re-opening of schools and parents needs to get assurance that their children are going to be safe while in schools,” Mwamu adds.

Mwamu says there should also be preparations for emergency cases that might arise where good ambulatory services are put in place to take care of any emergency in regard to suspected cases of Corona Virus in schools.

Mwamu adds that the issue of very sorry states of roads leading to various schools across the country should also be addressed, adding that a number of schools are not accessible.

“How do we expected teachers to bring up responsible students when they can’t access schools in time due to bad roads leading to schools,?” Mwamu asks.

He says both the National and County Government need to address the issue of pathetic states of roads.

Mwamu further adds that the issue of school fees payment should be clear from the word go since there seems to be confusion about whether parents need to pay fees immediately or not.

Meanwhile, 32 schools have so far benefitted from donation of Covid-19 kits items that include hand washing tanks, face masks and sanitizers from Mwalimu James Japheth Mwamu Foundation.

Last Friday, three schools namely Mbeme, Rweya Primary schools and Maisha Academy all in Kisumu East Constituency were the beneficiaries with Maisha Academy becoming the first private school to benefit.

The Foundation targets to reach 100 schools within Kisumu County to give such donations.
