Women in Kisumu County protest recent police brutality, want action taken

A NUMBER of women in areas where Police used excess force to quell peaceful protestors during the recent protests organized by Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance have protested the actions and now want action be taken against Police officers who engaged in such acts.

The women drawn from Sondu, Manyatta, Obunga, Nyawita, Kondele, Nyalenda, Bandani and Nyamasaria have come forth to protest against what they have termed as excessive police violence against the people of Kisumu.

Addressing the press in Kisumu today to register their protest against the recent police action on peaceful protestors and gaining access to people’s home and maimed a number of them in parts of informal settlement in Kisumu County and other areas, the women led by Millicent Randiki said the police meted violence right inside some homes resulting in untold suffering, leaving some people dead, injured and others traumatized.

They claim that their businesses were plundered as their money were stolen as a number of their properties destroyed.

In a statement read to the press, the women claimed in the past they also went through many targeted police brutality, rape and other human rights violations from 2007/08, 2013, 2017 where no action has been taken such atrocities.

“However, this time round, the intention to kill was visible in the action when they refused to come to our assistance as women, audible through their word,” they say in the Press statement.

They claim that the police brought violence from streets into their homes as their sons were dragged from their houses, beaten and later accused of demonstrating even when the evidences shows another thing.

They claim the action by President Dr William Ruto to publicly praise the police action was not in order as the President is supposed to be a symbol of National Unity.

They say all women must come out and speak boldly on the atrocities recently meted on people living in parts of Kisumu County.

They urge who normally go to the streets to do so by protesting peacefully while unarmed.

They urge the County Government of Kisumu to see a way on how they can go back to their various businesses.

They further the judicial system in the country to help dispensing justice to those whose rights were violated during the peaceful protests.
