Curriculum on Digital Literacy developed as 20M Kenyans set to be trained

The Government intends to train about 20 million Kenyans on Digital Literacy.

The Ministry of Information, Communication, Technology and Digital Economy says it has developed a curriculum that will be used to train over 20 million Kenyans to improve their digital literacy.

Cabinet Secretary in charge of ICT and Digital Economy Eliud Owalo says this training will equip Kenyans with Digital Literacy as well as increasing the number of people in the country with digital skills.

Owalo says other areas of focus in this regard include Last mile digital inclusion through WiFi, now ongoing; Digital super highway partner firms to expand the superhighway have been recruited; Digital skills training for the youth is ongoing.

In cybersecurity, we have already agreed with 15 partners who will begin a variety of training programs in cybersecurity from next month; and Citizens training for 5 million EOI is ongoing; among other things recommended at the last Connected Summit,” CS Owalo says.

Owalo adds that these milestones, and many more, clearly demonstrate that the Government has considered the ideas of the captains of Industry and thought leaders.

These captains and leaders are a part of our home-grown solutions to the challenges in the ICT sector. They are critical partners in the Kenyan mission of building a meaningful and connectivity for a functional digital economy,” Owalo adds.

Owalo says additionally, the Government has recently gazetted a Sector Working Group to review all policies and regulatory frameworks for both the ICT and Telecoms areas.

He further says this is in line with one of the Summit proposals earlier this year, adding that working group is expected to raise the flag on emerging challenges in such areas as cybersecurity, threats that require a new thinking and deeper collaboration by both the public and private sectors.

This Forum is very significant for all of us, as we put our minds together on how, as Kenya, we will host the Africa Conference next year.As the host country, we have the shared responsibility of mounting a resoundingly successful continental event.  I am confident that we will each all play our role in this regard,” he further adds.

Owalo has reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to providing quality digital platforms to all Kenyans, regardless of where they may be in the country and beyond.
