Muhoroni residents appeal for dyke construction
along River Nyando
The
residents of Muhoroni constituency have appealed to the Government to consider
construction of a dyke a long River Nyando to avert the issue of perennial floods
within the areas.
In a
memorandum presented to the Cabinet Secretary in charge of East African
Community, Arid and semi-arid areas and regional development Beatrice Askul
today when he visited Muhoroni constituency to distribute relief food, the
residents want the construction of dyke to commence from Kanyamtenda village up
to the Ahero Bridge.
Chairperson
of Disaster Committee Representatives Josephat Nyamwaya says there is also need
to construct the Multi-Purpose Koru-Soin Dam as part of permanent solution to
the flood menace within the constituency and their neghbouring Nyando.
He says the
Government should also construct Gabions along the dykes of River Nyando as
well as straightening the meanders of River Nyando to reduce water overflow and
spillways.
The
residents also ask the Government to set aside special funds for the
construction of classes in schools that have been affected by the floods within
the constituency, adding that schools like Obiayo, Kore, Kigoche, Masara and
Osembe Primary schools have been greatly affected by the floods.
Cabinet
Secretary in charge of East African Community, ASAL and Regional Development
Beatrice Askul assured the residents of Muhoroni that the Government will
construct the Dyke along River Nyando.
She has
directed the Principal Secretary Asal Kerow Harsame and the Managing Director
of Lake Basin Development Authority to fast track the process of the
construction of the Dykes along River Nyando.
Nyando
Member of Parliament Jared Okello says the Government should consider constructing
the Multi-purpose Koru-Soin Dam so as to provide a permanent solution to the
flood menace in Nyando and Muhoroni constituencies, adding that funds should be
set aside for this project.
