Parliament told to give political parties timeline on IEBC selection panel nominees

PARLIAMENT has been told to give timeline to political parties across the country on the issue of nominating persons to IEBC selection panel.

Former President of East African Law Society James Aggrey Mwamu says some political parties are dragging their feet on the issue of nominating the persons they want to be in the IEBC Selection Panel, adding that Parliament needs to give a timeline on this.

Addressing the press at his office in Kisumu, Mwamu said the most important thing now is to constitute the IEBC and have commissioners in place by end of next month.

Mwamu says other factors like reviewing boundaries which would have been done this year has not taken place simply because IEBC is not properly constituted, adding that the exercise if not carried out this year will be done next in 2034 which is in the next ten years coming.

He says those who moved to court to challenge the IEBC Selection Panel nominees should consider withdrawing such cases so as to pave the way to the panel to be in place and recruit IEBC Commissioners.

Mwamu says if IEBC will not be constituted by January next year, then their timelines won’t work well, adding that even their budgeting for the next General election in 2027 won’t be well tackled.

“By next year of 2025, we will only be counting one year to the next General Elections and if IEBC is not constituted on time then their programs will be  greatly be affected,”Mwamu says.

Mwamu adds that the preparation for the next General Elections should start immediately after the IEBC is constituted.

“The Executive and Parliament should act and ensure that the IEBC Selection Panel is in place by this December 31 then IEBC should be constituted latest end of January next year,” Mwamu adds.
