Public participation can’t be abolished, lawyer
tells Junet
The Process
of public participation is a constitutional one and can’t be abolished as some
politicians are demanding.
Former
President of the East African Law Society James Aggrey Mwamu says what the
Minority Party Leader in Parliament Junnet Mohamed uttered recently that there
is need to abolish Public Participation process is not in order at all.
Mwamu says
article ten of the constitution provides for the process of public
participation to be carried out among Kenyans so that their views are sought in
any matter that is of public interest more so about projects that are to be undertaken.
Addressing
the press in Kisumu, Mwamu said the reason why the process of public
participation is there is to allow members of the public who can’t go to
Parliament air their views outside the House and their views are counted
seriously.
Mwamu says
even in the United States, there is process of citizens’ participation where
the American citizens air their views on various issues.
The Former
President of the East African Law Society says calling for the abolishment of
the public participation process is very shocking.
‘’It is as
if these people want to take us back during the Kanu days of Moi where things
were done in opaque manner but this can’t happen in the era where Kenyans are
enlightened on many issues,’’ Mwamu says.
He at the
same time urged Kenyans to be on the alert during this festive season while
travelling to up country.
Mwamu also
urged the Government to provide adequate security during this festive season,
adding that security of all Kenyans should be guaranteed as they mark
