January 2, 2018.
We need free, fair
and transparent polls at LSK, says Mwamu.
THERE is need for a free, fair and transparent election in
the forthcoming polls at the Law Society of Kenya, an aspiring President has
said.
James Aggrey Mwamu who has declared his interest for the
seat of the Law Society of Kenya President in an election which will be held on
February 22 this year has called for not only a free and fair elections but
also transparent one.
Addressing the press in Kisumu today, Mwamu has said the Law
Society of Kenya must come out and state clearly what measures the Society and
the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission have put in place to avoid
instances of double voting as witnessed in the last LSK General Elections held
on February 25, 2016 between Milimani Law court and the Supreme Court Polling
centres.
Mwamu claims that they have received information that there
are over 1,600 uncollected LSK identity cards and are apprehensive that they
may be used for voting illegally if not distributed to their owners
immediately.
“The candidates demand that the said Identity Cards be
dispatched to the respective branch chairpersons for purposes of distribution
to their owners on or before January 15 this year. The ones whose owners have
not collected must be kept in safe custody at a place acceptable to all the
candidates after verification,” Mwamu says.
Mwamu also says the candidates demand an audit of the voters
register to ensure that names of deceased members have been deleted from the
said register and that the said register be made available on or before January
15 this year to all the candidates and members.
“All the candidates must be allowed to verify the register a
least by January 20 this year without fail,” he adds.
Mwamu who is also the Former President of the East Africa Law
Society has issued a warning to the Law Society of Kenya Deputy President Faith
Waigwa whom he alongside other candidates has accused of interfering with the
electoral process and manipulating the same.
“We have credible information that she has been exerting
pressure and giving certain directions to the CEO and the secretariat staff to
manipulate the process in favour of certain candidates.
He has urged the Law Society of Kenya CEO to reject such kind
of advances and pressure.
“We demand that the Council looks into the issue and take
action against such activities to ensure that the electoral process is free,
fair and transparent,” he adds in a press statement.
He has again urged members of LSK to reject such kind of
moves and vigilantly watch over the process to make sure it is free and fair.
