Engage the Opposition
in dialogue before January 30, veteran politician tells President Kenyatta.
A VETERAN Politician from Nyanza region has asked President
Uhuru Kenyatta to engage the National Super Alliance Leader Raila Odinga in a
constructive dialogue which can help to unite the country.
The Former Chairman of the now defunct South Nyanza County Council
{Now Migori and Homa Bay Counties} Elisha Aketch Chieng says it is through the
spirit of a constructive dialogue which can help the country to move forward
hence this should be embraced.
Addressing the press at his Homa Bay Town residence, Chieng
urged President Kenyatta not to engage in chest thumping and move forward in
ensuring that he engages in a dialogue with the Opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Chieng , 75 years, who is ailing and spoke to the press said it is not right for President Kenyatta to say that he does
want to engage the opposition in dialogue concerning politics but on
development.
He says President Kenyatta is a political leader of a ruling
party who should be engaged in political dialogue and the President should call
for a dialogue with the opposition so as to help save the situation the country
may face for failure of such dialogue.
“It is not right for President Kenyatta to say that he only
needs dialogue on development matters. This is because he is also a political
party leader and should agree to engage the opposition in political dialogue
which will help to move the country forward,” Chieng says.
He says the President should call for the dialogue with the
opposition before January 30 this year so that an amicable solution can be
found on the way forward, adding that the opposition has already hinted that
they are ready for dialogue and political reconciliation.
Chieng also tells off the Attorney General Prof Githu Muigai
not to keep on saying that it is treasonable if the Nasa Leader Raila Odinga is
sworn-in as people’s President as planned on January 30 next week.
“We do not want people to be scared with death and instead
people should be ready for the dialogue so that a way forward can be realized,”
Chieng adds.
Chieng’s sentiment comes barely a few days to the planned
swearing-in ceremony of the Nasa Leader Raila Odinga and his running mate
Kalonzo Musyoka as the People’s President which is said will be taking place next
Tuesday January 30 at a venue which is yet to be disclosed.
Already Attorney General Prof. Githu Muigai has said that
such a move is treasonable and its penalty is death if Nasa goes ahead and
swears-in its leader and the running mate.
