About 5M Kenyans so
far registered for Huduma Number, says CS Matiang’i.
ABOUT
5Million people have so far registered for the Huduma Number across the
country, the Cabinet Secretary in charge of Interior and National Government
Coordination Fred Matiang’i has said.
Matiang’i
said so far the registration has shown tremendous progress in various parts of
the country since the exercise kicked off last week in the entire country.
Addressing
the public at Jomo Kenyatta Sports when he visited the region to see the
progress of the ongoing exercise, Matiang’i directed all the Regional
Commissioners, County Commissioners and their assistants and Chiefs together
with their assistants to ensure that they mobilize the public to register so as
to have the huduma number.
Matiang’i
said so far he is impressed with the way the public is registering during the
ongoing exercise that targets to register Kenyans so that they can easily
access government services.
“So far, I
am impressed with the development made during the ongoing registration on
Huduma Number and I want to urge all Kenyans to turn up in large numbers for
this vital exercise across the country,” he said.
The Interior
Cabinet Secretary said the government is looking forward for all its citizens
to register under the new system.
Kisumu
Governor Prof.Anyang Nyong’o who accompanied the Interior CS urged the
residents of the country to turn up in large numbers and register, adding that
none should be left out of the exercise at all.
Kisumu
Senator Fred Outa who came and registered at the Jomo Kenyatta Sports ground
said the service is very much in order as it will help the government to keep
the citizen’s documents in one place digitally hence no need to constantly
continue carry hard original copies of the documents.
It is conducted by the National Integrated Identity Management system (NIIMS) and involves collecting biometric data after which the systems generates a unique number (Huduma Namba) which will enable one to access government services.
Such services include applying for a driving license, ID, birth certificate among others.
The government kicked off pilot testing on Monday across 15 counties including Nairobi, Makueni, Uasin Gishu, Embu, Busia, Kajiado, Baringo, Marsabit, Kilifi, Kisii, Tana River, Embu, Kisumu, and Wajir.
Launching the project, PS, Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government of Kenya, Karanja Kibicho assured Kenyans that they did not have to go to their places of birth to register.
Kenyans are required to carry several documents like the national identity card, KRA personal identification number, driving license, passport and many others.
All these documents are recorded in different databases so Huduma Namba consolidates the information to arrive at the ‘single source of truth’ regarding a Kenyan.
There is no new data the government is looking for only as the difference is that it is digital and biometric.
