Government Releases sh 2 Billion for TVET,Says PS.

The government has released sh 2 billion capitation money to all TVET institutions. 

This follows government decision to waive fees for those enrolled into the institutions. 

The PS in charge of technical institutions Kevit  Desai said the government also plans to hire 2000 trainers in two weeks time to solve  the  biting shortage teaching staff that the institutions have been facing over the years  

Speaking in Kisumu during an inauguration of new boards  of governance for several TVET institutions drawn from  the western Kenya region the PS said efforts to increasing access into TVET institutions was already bearing fruits as more youths show interest to join the Centers. 

He said so far the promotion drive for TVET enrolment has seen 190,000 students enrol for various technical courses which he observed will enhance efforts by government to achieve its development initiatives. 

" we have achieved upto 130% enrollment which is shows that young people have started embracing  acquisition of technical skills which will be key in driving economic growth of our country " he said .

He said the government targets to have 300,000 students by June this year and a further 600,000  by nexr year and called on the county governments to all also compliment what the national government was doing to support technical skills training. 

The PS noted that even as efforts to expand capacity of the institutions was on top agenda including equipping them with modern machines for training, standards and quality of what is taught must be maintained. 

" we must ensure we maintains the standards of the outcome of all theses efforts.  Our trainings must be competitive" he added. 

As part of the expansion program, there are plans establish 15 more TVET Centers. 


He disclosed that the government will release sh 1.2 billion to the Kisumu National Polytechnic to help in the revival of the textile industry. 

The money will be used to help in promotion of  cotton development and value addition. 

" The initiative which will be undertaken at the Polytechnic will seek to enhance how cotton industry can be revived through technology transfer and will lay emphasis on the value chain in the textile industry. " he said .
