No National Exams for Grade 3 pupils under new Curriculum, Magoha clarifies.

EDUCATION Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has clarified that there will be no national Examination conducted by the Kenya National Examination Council to grade three pupils under the new system of education.

Prof. Magoha says the reports that has appeared in a section of the local dailies that there will be a national examination administered to all grade three pupils at the end of their final year in lower primary while proceeding to grade four are misleading and not true.

Addressing the press at Lake Primary school in Kisumu today after visiting some centers in Western Kenya region where a four day training for teachers has been ongoing on the new Education System known as Competency Based Curriculum {CBC} Magoha said that statement was not correct since the whole essence of the Competency Based Curriculum is assessment.

He says there will be nothing like national exams or National Assessment at the end of the third year of the learner under the new curriculum.

Magoha says the Assessment that will be done during the implementation of the new curriculum will be done at all stages.

“That statement about having national exams at the end of year three of the learner in grade three was not correct because the whole essence of the CBC will be assessment,” Magoha said.

The Education Cabinet Secretary says at the end of the third year in lower primary school, assessment will be done where the marking schemes which the teachers have been hiding under the old curriculum system of education will be put open to pupils who will be told what performance they expect from the Assessment to be done.

“There will be nothing like the National exams at the end of three years in lower primary only assessment will be done and for the first time the Marking schemes which used to be hidden by teachers is going to be open and the child will be told what he will score in regard to his or her performance,” Magoha added.

Magoha at the same time said the training of teachers on the new curriculum has been conducted well across the country for the four days.

The Education Cabinet Secretary said he has visited over 20 schools across the country where the trainings have been conducted and has shown that the trainings have been successful.

“I have had a good feel on how the trainings about the new Curriculum and I have seen that it has been successful,” he said.

The Cabinet Secretary said those who are doubting that the new curriculum will not be implemented will be in for a rude shock.
