THE Ahero Vocational Training Center within Nyando
Sub-County in Kisumu has marked 50 years since it was established.
The Training Center yesterday marked the colorful event in a
ceremony that was presided over by the Catholic Church Arch Bishop of Kisumu
Arch Diocese Philip Anyolo.
Addressing the gathering during the event that was marked
with pomp and color, Ahero Vocational Training Center Manager Martin Owino said
the institution has made tremendous progress since its inception in the year
1968 by the Catholic Church that has been its sponsor.
Owino says now the institution is under the County
Government of Kisumu, there is a lot to be done for it to help in sustaining
the kind of vocational training it offers to the students.
Owino says already the institution has a total of 619
students who are currently studying various courses on vocational training,
adding that previously the institution only had 100 students.
He says the Community’s perception about vocational training
has really changed, adding that in the past the community viewed vocational
training for those who had failed in formal education.
“I want to say that indeed the community’s perception has
changed towards the vocational training and this has been due to good publicity
the media has been giving such institutions,” Owino says.
Owino says currently the County Government of Kisumu is
sponsoring 20 students per ward to come for the vocational training, adding
that this is a good gesture that the institution is growing in terms of its
population.
He says the institution has carried out a fund raising
ceremony to help in putting up girls’ hostel within the place.
Owino says already they have started partnership with some
organizations which will help in the growth of the institution.
The Center Manager adds that already the institution is
aligning itself to the Government’s Big Four Agenda and is offering training in
line with those Big Four Agenda.
Richard Bonyo who works with the Kenya Youth Support program
says already the kitty has given ten tool boxes to the Ahero Vocational
Training Center in July this year.
He says the tools enable the students to be trained in both
grade one and two of their trainings at the Center.
Bonyo says the tools are very vital because they really help
the learners to get practical while being trained.
“The industrial Policy require that every engineer must
ensure that he has 18 artisans who are able to do the manual work,” Bonyo says.
He says even Mong’oni Vocational Training Center in Nyamira
County also benefitted from the tools kitty ten in number.
