Kisumu City Signs contracts worth over shs 800M of World Bank funded projects

 

THE Management of Kisumu City has signed contracts for project worth over shs 800 million funded by the World Bank.

 

The projects funded by the World Bank under the Kenya Urban Support Program are in its second phase.

 

Addressing the press in Kisumu today during the signing Ceremony at Kisumu’s City Hall, Kisumu City Manager Doris Ombara said this is the second phase of the program in Kisumu City after the first one became successful.

 

Ombara says there are five infrastructure projects which their contracts have been signed for the work to commence by next week when ground breaking ceremony will be conducted.

 

She says one of the projects is the Construction of Nyamasaria Satellite Bus Park which is meant to de-congest the Kisumu main bus terminus which is within the Central Business District, adding that the project will cost about shs 100million in its first phase.

 

Ombara says the project is the first one to be implemented and will be followed by the one in Kisian and Mamboleo in the next financial year.

 

Ombara says the second one is the Construction of Non – Motorized Transport Facility which is the Phase two and has been awarded to Chaju Builders who did the first phase of the project, adding that the project will cost about 659 Million shillings

 

Ombara adds that the other one is the Improvement of Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground which has been awarded to Grama Logistics Enterprises at shs 111 Million.

 

Ombara further says the fourth one is about the Improvement of Jamhuri Gardens which is next to Prosperity Market Park at Oile, Botanical Garden and Street-scaping along Kisumu Urban Roads which has been awarded to Astronea Construction Company Limited at shs 111million.

 

 The Kisumu City Manager says the fifth project is the Construction of Kaloleni Community Centre which is awarded to Polish Contractors at a cost of shs 151milion, adding that the company that has been awarded this contract build a modern school known as Thim Bonde in Kisumu County under the Kisumu Urban Project.

 

Ombara at the same time say that there are Consultants who have been awarded contract for consultancy services for the five projects which will supervise the work during the implementation of the projects.

 

She adds that one of them is the Eco-Science Engineering which will offer consultancy on the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment at a cost of shs 10.9 million.

 

“The Eco-Science Engineering will be supervising and doing all the social and environmental Impact Assessment for this project because the World Bank is very strict and will always be sending officers to check on the progress of the project,” Ombara says.

 

She adds that the second Consultancy services for design, review, supervision for the proposed construction of Nyamasaria Satellite Bus Park, adding that this consultancy work will be done by Edon Consultants at a cost of shs 5.6 million.

 

“The other one is consultancy for the design and supervision for the proposed construction of Designed Dunga Beach water Front and has been awarded to DLR Group of Associates with batch consulting engineering,” Ombara adds.

 

Ombara further says the fourth one is about Consultancy services for design, review and supervision for the Construction of the Non-Motorized transport phase two and is done at a cost of shs 37 Million awarded to Rein Engineering Services.

 

She further says the other one is about Consultancy services for design, review and supervision for the proposed improvement of Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground and other open spaces and streetscaping which will really give the image of the Kisumu City and has been awarded to professional consultant at a cost of shs 9.7 million.

 

Ombara lastly said the sixth one is about Consultancy services for design, review and supervision for the proposed construction of Construction of Kaloleni Community Centre and the services are awarded to GP Consulting Engineering Limited.

 

Ombara says these are one of the Kisumu Governor’s project which he has negotiated for and will ensure that they are fully implemented.

 

Kolwa Central Member of the County Assembly George Olwal in whose area the project of Constructing Nyamasaria satellite Bus Park will be has really lauded the move to have it there.

 

Olwal says who is also the chairman of the Committee on Planning  and Urban Development says a project of such magnitude should equally benefit the people living around such areas where they are implemented.

 

The project is an annual infrastructure improvement program funded by the World Bank through the State Department of Housing and Urban Development to counties with urban centres/cities in the devolved units governed in strict conformity to the dictates of the Urban Areas and Cities Act and complying with government set fiscal management infrastructure.

 

The award for the funding of phase two follows successful implementation of the phase one funding which has transformed the city’s outlook.
