Call for mass voter registration in Nyanza ahead of next year's polls
THE Residents of the six counties in Nyanza region have been
urged to register in large numbers as voters ahead of next year’s General
Elections
Former President of the East African Law Society Lawyer James
Agrees Mwamu says he fully supports Orange Democratic Movement {ODM Party
leader Raila Odinga’s recent call on the residents of the Nyanza region as well
in other parts of the country to register in large numbers as voters in
readiness for the next year’s General election slated for August 9, 2021 in
accordance to the Constitution of Kenya 2010.
Addressing the press at his office after attending a Church
Service at Jesus Celebration Center within Mowlem area in Kisumu East
Constituency yesterday, Mwamu said with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission{IEBC}
has set out the regulations for the next General Elections, the commission will
soon kick off the process of registering voters for the next General Elections.
He says those who have not registered as voters in the six
Counties of Nyanza region namely Kisumu, Siaya, Migori, Homa Bay, Kisii and
Nyamira should take advantage of such exercise when it kicks off across the
country ahead of the next year’s polls.
“When the IEBC Kicks off the voter registration exercise,
please let those who have never registered go and be registered as voters so
that they can exercise their democratic right in participating in the electoral
process in the next year’s polls,” Mwamu says.
Mwamu urges the electorates to vote overwhelmingly during
the next year’s elections and choose leaders of their choice because the
exercise is a constitutional right.
He urges those of 18 years and above who have not obtained
the National Identity Cards to go to various offices of Registrar of Persons to
obtain such important document, adding that they should also registered as
voters once they obtain their IDs.
“Let us not wait until the last minute then we rush for the
process of obtaining the ID cards. This is not good at all and our people
should take this piece of advice seriously,” he adds
Mwamu says the next year’s polls is a very important one as
it will define the future of this country for the next five or ten years
“You have already seen that whoever you have elected
determines how the County, Ward and even what roads get in a given financial
year budget,” Mwamu further says.
Mwamu at the same time has urged the electoral Body to
closely work with Parliament to come up with a legislation that will surely
help on the issue of regulating the campaign funds during the next General
Elections.
“Any legislation passes through Parliament and IEBC should liaise
with the law making organ to set the parameters on regulating the campaign funds
during the electioneering period,” he further adds.
