Election kicks off with small hitches reported in Kisumu
The Country has gone to another General election to put
leaders in place in an election whose stakes have been very high as the
exercise kicks off in different parts of the country with cases of hitches
being reported.
In Kisumu, voting kicked off in most polling stations at
6:00am where long queues have been witnessed when the exercise kicked off.
A spot check by this writer reveal that in most polling
stations had higher number of people who wanted to vote in the morning and
resume their work or businesses within the Central Business District.
At Aga Khan Hall Polling center in Railways ward within
Kisumu Central Constituency, several tents that acted as Polling stations, long queues were witnessed for the
better part of the morning as electorates trooped in to cast their voters.
Security personnel were manning the various polling centers
while maintaining law and order within the designated area.
Claims of people trying to woo their friends to vote in a
particular way were witnessed as at the gates of some polling centers, groups
of people could be seen canvassing and talking to those who were entering the
centers to cast their votes.
At Nanga Primary school and Pand Pieri School, two other polling
centers within the Kisumu Central constituency, long queues were order of the
day for the better part of the morning but come in the afternoon, only a few
people were coming in to cast their votes.
Kisumu Governor who is defending his seat on an ODM Party
cast his vote at Rata Primary school in Seme Sub-County by 8:30am and proceeded
in Kisumu City where he monitored the election.
Nyong’o who later convened a press conference at Azimio La
Umoja one Kenya Alliance Coalition regional office claimed that there were
failure of Kenya Integrated Election Management Systems {Kiems} kits in the
four counties of Nyanza that has delayed voting in most parts of counties
mentioned.
Nyong’o says there has not been identification of voters
manually, adding that this has made those who have not been identified
electronically vote.
Nyong’o says the issue of Kiems validation forms has been a
major hindrance to voting, adding that IEBC should use the right procedure in
voting.
He has asked IEBC to get rid of the Kiems Validation forms in
order to allow electorates votes freely without putting such conditions.
Nyong’o has appealed to the people of Kisumu County to
remain peaceful as the issue is being sorted to ensure smooth voting process.
Nyong’o has further urged the electoral body to extend the voting
to 8:00 pm countrywide so as to allow voters who have been interrupted within
the day to vote, adding that this will help in ensuring that many people are
not left out on the voting day.
