Kewota calls for
peaceful poll ahead next week
The Kenya Women Teachers Association {KEWOTA} has called
upon Kenyans to ensure that peace prevails before, during and after that poll
that will be held on Tuesday next week.
The Kenya Women Teachers Association General Secretary and Chief
Executive Secretary {CEO} Benter Opande says Kenyans should go to the poll with
a lot of peace and elect leaders who will steer the country to the next level.
Addressing the press during their Kisumu East Sub county meeting
held at Nyamasaria Primary school during the weekend, the Chief Executive
Officer said there should be peaceful environment before, during and after the
poll.
Opande has appealed to teachers whom she has described as
change agents to ensure that peace is fully maintained in their areas of
jurisdictions being that some of them have been recruited as election officials
in the forthcoming poll next week on Tuesday.
She says tension which has been reported in a section of the
media should never be escalated since there is need to preach peace and
tranquility before, during and after the election.
Opande has urged the Government to ensure that there is adequate
security within the Polling stations and tallying centers across the country
during this period of electioneering.
She has further urged Kenyans to fully participate in the
electoral process peacefully and wait for its outcome from the IEBC.
The CEO says she believes that the IEBC will carry out a Free,
fair, transparent and credible election with an outcome that will be received
positively by most Kenyans.
Opande has observed that the Education Cabinet Secretary
Prof George Magoha’s recent decision to close all the schools abruptly was very
inconveniencing but stakeholders had to abide by such a decision.
“For the CS Education to come up with such an announcement
to close schools across the country due to election, it must have come after a
cabinet meeting chaired by the President,” she says.
At the same time, the Kewota CEO says there is need to
sensitize teachers, parents and other stakeholders on the issue of pupils transiting
from Grade six to junior secondary schools adding that this is a new phenomenon.
“Stakeholders need to know whether Grade Six are going to
proceed in Secondary schools or remain in primary while at that level of Junior
Secondary school,”Opande adds.
