Nyando residents get
clean water of sh 60M from Habitat for humanity
RESIDENTS of Kochogo South Sub-location in Nyando
constituency have been provided with a clean water for their domestic use
especially drinking purposes at an estimated cost of shs 60 million.
The community water Project has been a brain child of
Habitat for Humanity Kenya in partnership with the county Government of Kisumu
and is set to benefit about 4,000 people residing within the area.
Addressing the press during the officially commissioning of
the Community Water Project, Habitat for Humanity Kenya National Director
Antony Okoth said the Organization has drilled the borehole that is able to
produce a fresh water of 20 cubic meters per hour for the community.
He says the water project will benefit about 4,000 people
and will be distributed to 880 homes within the said area.
The national Coordinator says they are working closely with
the county Government of Kisumu through the local leadership to ensure that the
project is a great success to the entire community.
He says that what motivated the Habitat for Humanity to
commence the project within the area is that it identified the need for the
community which is water and gave it a priority.
He says the project comes along with an initiative to
identify 40 homes where they will construct modern latrines so as to improve
sanitation in the Water Hygiene and Sanitation component.
He adds that the project also target that the issues of hygiene
are taught right from primary schools.
Okoth further says the community water project will also
benefit two primary schools that is Nyomwaro and Disi Primary schools within
Kochogo South which have been lacking clean drinking water.
He adds that the project also aims at de-silting water ways
within the community to reduce flooding within the area during the long rains
season.
“To avert consistent flooding, the Habitat for Humanity
Kenya will de silt and embark on having a 12 kilometer canal within the region
to enhance their drainage capacity,” Okoth says.
On housing for the vulnerable groups in Kenya, Okoth says
346,000 people have benefited from this in the period of 42 years the
organization has been in existence.
He says they are also working with both the National and
County Governments to look into solutions of driving the cost of housing.
Member of the County Assembly for Ahero Ward Ken Ooko says
the project that has been done in partnership between the County Government of
Kisumu and the Habitat for Humanity will be of great help to the community living
within Kochogo South.
He says the project worth is about shs 60 million and has
various components that includes the construction of a 12 door latrine both at
Nyomwaro and Disi Primary schools as well as de-silting rivers and canals to
help in controlling floods.
Ooko adds that the project which is situated at Disi
Catholic Church will indeed change the lives of the residents of Kochogo South
and beyond.
He says talks are rife that the project be extended to other
parts of Nyando so as to benefit more residents.
Members of Kochogo South Water Community Based Organization
has thanked both the county Government of Kisumu and the Habitat for Humanity
for the project.
Through their Chairman Michael Gogo, the residents are
optimistic that the project and its other components will greatly change their
lives.
The Commissioning of the water project follows a successful drilling
of 204 meter borehole that has produce fresh water to serve the community.
The water project will also be reticulated to additional
five kiosks to benefit the community members as well as being supplied in two
schools
