Sugar cane Farmers want Chemelil MD Confirmed

Sugar cane farmers supplying Chemelil Sugar Company in Kisumu County now want the Government to immediately reconstitute the Board of Directors for the company to recruit the current Managing Director who has been acting for nearly five years.

The farmers says the current Managing Director Gabriel Nyangweso has done  a great work and has helped in the revival of the Chemelil Sugar  Company that was on the verge of collapse before he was appointed as Managing Director on Acting Capacity in the year 2016.

Addressing the press after their stakeholders meeting today at the Factory’s cane yard, the farmers said the Government should move with speed and constitute the Board of Directors of Chemelil Sugar Company who will be in charge of recruiting the Managing Director Competitively.

Chemelil Sugarcane Farmers Branch Secretary Caleb Ochieng says despite the current Court’s ruling that declared the currently Managing Director’s staying in office as unlawful, the Government should consider recruiting the MD competitively.

He says Farmers have agreed with recent court’s ruling that it is unlawful to keep the current Managing Director in acting capacity for over five years without confirming him.

“We support the order that the concerned authority reconstitute the Board of Directors so as to complete the recruitment process of the Chemelil Sugar Company Managing Director as this is the cure for the situation,” they say in a signed press statement.

The farmers at the same time refuted claims that the company is limping in terms of performance, adding that despite setbacks caused by the mechanical condition of the factory, stiff competition for the raw material, fluctuation of the sugar price and other factors, great achievements have been witnessed during the reign of the currently management led by Gabriel Nyangweso as its Managing director.

They says some of the achievements include unmatched effectiveness in utilizing little resources to achieve substantive level of efficiency, adding that this has returned the value for every coin that the company receives.

“The unprecedented consistency in releasing can proceeds of shs 30 million and arrears of shs 7.5 million on a weekly basis where over sh 800 million has been paid to farmers in the last five months has been one of the greatest achievements,” they add.
