Malaria burden in Ksm has been reduced to 10 from 50 percent

The burden of Malaria disease in Kisumu County has been reduced to ten from 50 percent, a health official has said.

The Kisumu County Director of Public Health and Sanitation Liliana Dayo says in early 2000, the burden of malaria disease in Kisumu County used to be at 50 percent but has since been reduced to 10 percent.

Addressing the residents of Muhoroni Sub-County during this  year’s World Malaria Day held at Ombeyi Primary school, the Director of Public Health and Sanitation said the reduction in the percentage has been witnessed due to some interventions put in place to combat the disease.

She says one of the intervention is preventive and curative approach to combat the disease within the various parts of Kisumu County.

She says the use of Mosquito nets by various residents who sleep under them at night has been really of great help to help prevent the spread of malaria.

The Director says another intervention is about vaccinating children against malaria disease.

Dayo says they have also strengthened the knowledge and capacity building of the Community Health Workers {CHWs} within Kisumu County on issues to deal with malaria.

“Our Community Health Workers are now able to test and treat members of the community who are suffering from malaria and this has been done so well within the various wards in Kisumu County,” the Director says.

She adds that the various health facilities have been able to have good equipment for testing and treating Malaria.

The director at the same time said they are also doing household residual spraying targeting mosquitoes that spreads malaria.

She says the exercise has been carried out in Nyando sub-county because it is most affected due to frequent flooding during the long rainy season.

She says already the exercise has seen 5,000 households in Nyando sprayed, adding that they target between 60,000 to 70,000 households for the exercise that kicked off two weeks ago.

She further says that they will move to other Sub-Counties like Seme and Kisumu East with high burden of malaria to carry out the exercise.
