Social Justice Center in Muhoroni plant trees to mitigate climate change  

 

A Social Justice Center in Muhoroni Constituency has embarked on planting trees during this long rainy season to mitigate on issues of climate change within the area.

 

The Miwani Social Justice Center has begun its annual tree planting that involves youth both from Kisumu and Nandi counties border and also on a conversation on peace building as well as participating in community service.

 

Addressing the press during the ceremony, Coordinator of the Miwani Social Justice Center Nicholas Mirema said they have been doing the exercise for the last three years.

 

He says they have also been participating in the cleaning exercise of Miwani Police Station that include the holding cells area as well as planting trees to help in addressing the issue of climate change.

 

He says they have planted 50 trees during this year’s exercise that kicked off on Wednesday this week, adding that this has been  in collaboration with Economic Freedom Movement and office of the area MCA.

 

We gathered at Miwani Police station for our annual tree planting and cleaning exercise which we been doing for the last three years. This initiative involves bringing together youths across the Nandi and Kisumu border for a conversation on peace building as well as participating in community service through; cleaning the station including holding cells and tree planting,” he says.

 

He says the community need to understand the challenges facing the Miwani Police station and the community embracement.

 

“We have noted with great concern the worst condition of the buildings within the station that include the reporting office and holding cells, which needs an urgent interventions as the building are too old,” he adds.

 

 He says together the community can be liberated on issues of climate and environment injustices.

 

Other Organization involved in the initiative also include Social Justice Centers Working Group,

Article 43 Committee, Embassy of the Netherlands in Kenya Women Volunteers for Peace {Wovop} and Equality Now.
