No to Privatization
process of Govt owned sugar millers until issue of land solved
A Member of Parliament from Nyando Sugar Belt Growing area
has said there will be no process of selling state owned sugar millers to
private investors until the issue of land where such factories are located and
their sugar cane nuclear are addressed.
Muhoroni Member of Parliament James Mathews Onyango K’Oyoo says
the current Government should consider first addressing the issue of the land
where the factories are including the sugar cane nuclear through a proper
process of public participation.
Addressing the press after attending Parents AGM at Koru
Girls High School, Muhoroni MP says there is no way the process of privatizing the
Government owned sugar factories can take place without properly addressing the
issue of the land.
K’Oyoo says the process of Privatization should be kicked
afresh to help in addressing the issues sugar cane farmers have been raising
such as that of the land and that of percentage in shareholding by them in such
an arrangement.
The Muhoroni Member of Parliament’s sentiment comes a few
days after a Parliamentary committee on Agriculture visited sugar factories in
Kisumu County to get the stakeholders view on the need to re-introduce the
Kenya Sugar Board through a Bill in Parliament.
Sugar Cane Farmers and other Stakeholders like Sugar
Factories workers have welcomed the move to bring back the Kenya Sugar Board
and told the Committee to speed up the process.
Sugar Factories workers say they should have a
representative at the Kenya Sugar Board when it will be re-introduced after its
Bill is passed in National Assembly.
The Government has been planning to privatize its owned Sugar Millers namely Muhoroni Sugar Company, Chemelil Sugar Company, Miwani Sugar Company, Nzoia Sugar Company and Sony Sugar Company.
