Govt set to review current mining policies

The National Government is set to review the existing mining policies in the country.

The new Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Hassan Joho says this is aimed at curbing massive exploitation of a number of traditional miners in the country.

Speaking in Kisumu during a courtesy call at the Regional Mining Offices, Joho said the Government want to urgently review the mining policies including those applied while mining gold so as to come up with unilateral laws that will benefit both traditional miners and investors.

The Cabinet Secretary says over the years, the traditional miners have been held hostage by unscrupulous middlemen within the mining industry.

“This is why we want the new policy reforms to curtail and tame gold mining cartels across the country,” the Cabinet Secretary says.

The Cabinet Secretary has assured the traditional miners that the Ministry will digitalize its operations to enhance transparency and accountability in the sector.

Joho also assured the miners that upon the review of the existing policies on mining, no royalties will be paid after six or seven years.

“There will be no more waiting period for years once the new mining policies are place,” the Cabinet Secretary adds.
