Govt told to avert
the looming Nationwide Teachers strike
The Government has been told to avert the nationwide
teachers’ strike that both the Kenya National Union of Teachers and Kenya Union
of Post-Primary Education Teachers have called as schools re-opens next week
for third term.
Parents from Nyanza region now want the Government to fully intervene
and ensure that the looming strike is averted for students across the country to
continue with the learning process for the third term.
Led by the Nyanza Regional Kenya National Association of Parents
Chairman Jackson Omollo Ogweno, the parents say third term is packed with a
number of academic activities that include administering national examinations
hence should never be interrupted by the nationwide teachers strike.
Ogweno has challenged President Ruto to call for an
immediate meeting with the leadership of both Knut and Kuppet to engage them in
a serious dialogue.
Omollo says the demands by both the two unions representing
teachers are genuine and they should be engaged in an amicable dialogue.
“We humbly ask President Ruto to convene a meeting with the
leadership of both Knut and Kuppet to see a way forward in solving the issue of
the looming strike as school re-opens next week for third term across the
country,” Ogweno says
Ogweno at the same time ask Government to release the
Capitation funding to schools earlier enough to help in the smooth running of
such institutions.
He says the delays in disbursing the capitation to schools
normally temper with schools’ operations.
The Nyanza Regional Parents’ Chairperson also ask the
Government to review the issue of university funding currently being implemented
saying it is discriminatory.
He says the funding model is not set to benefit those
deserving cases of students as some of them have been awarded peanuts.
Omollo says a number of students have been placed in
different bands but do not know which ones they have been categorized at as
they join their first year at the university.
The Nyanza Parents’ association sentiment comes barely a few
days after the Teacher’s Service Commission Chief Executive Office Nancy
Macharia has invited both Knut and Kuppet for a talks on pay today August 21,
2024 as part of the Government’s effort to try and resolve the shs 13.3 billion
Teachers’ pay dispute.
