ASSOCIATION of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) has condemned and called for thorough and expeditious investigations into the attack against journalists at St. Stevens Girls School, Kyumbi Township, Machakos that occurred on Monday this week.

The Association’s Chairperson Dorothy Ngoroge said they call for an inquiry into the circumstances that led to the attack against journalist Boniface Kirera Magana, a camera man with Kenya Television Network (KTN), Caroline Bii, a reporter with the same station and their driver, Joseph Emmaculate Musyawa.

In a signed press statement to newsrooms, the Association want the Police to move with speed and ensure all those involved the nasty incident are investigated and brought to book.

The Chairperson said the journalists were on a mission to investigate a story in which a form two student has been missing from the school.

“The journalists who were accompanied by Mary Mukami, the mother of the missing student were unfortunately pelted with stones and where more than six students injured.  Article 33 of the Constitution guarantees Journalists the freedom to seek, receive, or impart information or ideas. It was unfortunate to mobilize and unleash the students upon the journalists,” she said.

The Association has appreciated that the journalists have reported the matter to the police and the head teacher arraigned in court, adding that there is need to get to the bottom of the matter.
