Kisumu MCAs want bursary
allocation for wards increased to shs 5 million to benefit many.
MEMBERS of the County Assembly of Kisumu want the County
Government to increase the bursary allocation to their wards from shs 2million
to shs 5million per ward every financial year.
Market/Mlimani Ward Representative Seth Ochieng Kanga says the
current bursary allocation to the wards of sh 2million is not enough at all
hence need to increase it.
Addressing the press and electorates of Market/Mlimani Ward
today during the official disbursement of the ward’s bursary cheques to
beneficiaries where over sh 1.9 million has been disbursed, Kanga said his ward
which currently receives shs 2 million in form of bursary allocation can’t be
enough because it has many electorates estimated to be about 38,000 voters whom
a number of them have needy students that should be assisted through the
bursary.
Kanga said a total of 1200 applicants applied for the
bursary but only 800 brought back the application forms where only 438
applicants have been successful and awarded bursary in secondary, tertiary
institutions and driving schools.
Kanga said every needy and bright students from the ward
deserve to benefit from the kitty which is purely a public fund provided by the
County Government of Kisumu.
“A ward like Market/Mlimani ward where I represent at the
County Assembly of Kisumu have an estimated 38,000 voters and most of them have
needy students and the current allocation of sh 2Million is not enough
therefore we ask for it to be increased to about shs 5million every financial
year so as to be able to benefit many,” Kanga said.
He said he will team up with fellow MCAs in Kisumu County so
as to push for such an increase through legislations at the County Assembly of
Kisum.
The MCA at the same time accused a section of County
Government officials who are in charge of overseeing the process of bursary
allocation of not doing when their work hence ended up messing up during the
entire exercise prompting the cancellation of the first exercise.
He has urged to transparency and accountability in the
entire process of identifying those who should surely benefit from the kitty.
