Multi-agencies launch cleaning of Lake Victoria through Rapid Results Initiative

VARIOUS Multi-agencies group have launched a process of cleaning the Lake Victoria through Rapid Results Initiative.

Led by the Nyanza Regional Commissioner James Kianda and Kisumu Governor Prof Peter Anyang Nyong’o, the agencies will help in the clean-up of the Lake Victoria to get rid of water hyacinth among other solid impurities.

Addressing the press during the official launch of the exercise, Nyanza regional Commissioner James Kianda said the exercise will take ten days during which river Kisat that empties its waters to Lake Victoria will be clean.

He says after the ten days Rapid Result Initiative elapsed, another 20 days will be launched so as to make it 30 days of the exercise.

The Regional Commissioner says this is a way of making the Lake waters clean by removing the anything that makes it dirty.

Kianda says as a result of the heavy downpour, there has been pollution in the Lake Victoria.
He says there is s directive they are implementing through a multi-agencies approach in the issue of cleaning and protecting the Lake Victoria.

He says the Multi-Agencies approach is also targeting Governors within the Lake Region Economic Bloc where various committees coordinating this within Counties and Sub-Counties will be reactivated to deal with issue of conserving the environment.

“A multi-sectorial Committees have been formed and we have a serious work plan during this Rapid Results Initiative,”  Kianda says.

He says within the period, a number of activities will be carried out to ensure that the Lake Victoria and its environment is protected.

Kianda says there is also need to manage the solid waste within the estates.

He added that the whole idea is to ensure that the new refurbished Kisumu Port is clean and attractive.

Kisumu Governor Prof Peter Anyang Nyong’o said there is a new beginning by the launch of cleaning of the Lake Victoria.

Nyong’o promised his Government’s full support towards the Initiative, adding that the initiative also targets other counties that fall under the Lake Region Economic Bloc comprising of 14 Counties.

Some of the Institutions that area engage in the Multi-Agency approach in the Cleaning of the Lake Victoria include Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company, National Environmental Management Authority, Water Resource Authority, the County Government of Kisumu among others.

The Cleaning exercise has been launched near the Nyanza Golf Club where River Kisat empties its waters into the Lake Victoria. 

The Launch of exercise comes barely a few days after there have been complaints that some institutions have been heavily polluting the Lake through effluent that is not properly treated.

Some of the organizations that have been accused of polluting the Lake include Kiwasco, Kodiaga Prisons, Equator bottlers Limited, kenya Breweries Plant in Kisumu among others.
