Corruption is to blame for not implementing affordable Housing issue

The Government has been urged to address the issue of corruption in the country which is one of the factors that hinder the implementation of the issue of Adequate and affordable Housing for sustainable development.

Chairman of the Kenyan Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee Opiyo Wandayi says the issue of rampant corruption is a major hindrance to the full realization of the issue of Adequate and affordable Housing in the country.

Addressing the Second International Conference in Kisumu on Housing, Waste management and Sanitation Wandayi said it is not right to take the issue of corruption as part of culture where it is practiced with a lot of impunity.

"One of the issues that is a major stumbling block towards achieving the issue of adequate and affordable Housing is corruption which must be dealt with for the issue of achieved,"Wandayi says.

Wandayi says for the Vice to be fully dealt with, there must be a political goodwill.

He calls for the all corruption related cases to be handled with a lot of speed within the criminal justice system and justice served immediately.

"Corruption cases normally taken too long to be prosecuted within the Criminal Justice System hence this give a leeway for more corruption issues to thrive and this must be dealt with," Wandayi adds.

Wandayi who is the Member of Parliament for Ugunja Constituency suggests that the National Housing Corporation should be left with the sole mandate of development of housing units in the country.

He says the Corporation has the expertise and only lacks Resources which it needs to be allocated fully, adding that the Ministry of Housing should not build houses too alongside the corporation to avoid confusion.

Former East African Legislative Assembly Member Nancy Abisai said more focus need to be put on policy frameworks and legislations to ensure that there is adequate and affordable housing that include proper waste management and sanitation especially in the informal settlements.

She says there should be proper Financing on Housing in the Country.

Abisai adds that the issue of poor housing should be addressed or else the issue of housing problems will continue to be there.
