International Conference on Affordable Housing
Kisumu City is set to host the Second International
Conference on adequate and Affordable Housing for all for sustainable
development this month of October.
The Conference is organized into two parts namely one which
will be conducted virtually and the one which will be conducted physically in
Kisumu City.
Addressing the press in Kisumu today to brief the press on
the preparation made so far for the conference, Coordinator of Grass Root Trust
Lawrence Kapiyo said the virtual Conference will be held next week on October 5 and
6.
He says the physical meeting for the conference will be held
on October 18 and 19 with not more than 100 people attending it within the Lake
side City of Kisumu.
Kapiyo says the main reason of holding a physical meeting
during the said international Conference is that it is the best way to
influence and agree with people who are not convinced.
He says the virtual meeting will be held so as to help
adhere with the health protocols on Covid-19 disease.
Kapiyo says the overall objective of the Conference is to
promote sustained stronger engagement, commitment and support of the National
and County Governments on land reforms, moratorium on evictions and
implementation of affordable housing with focus on low-income category of the
society thus contributing to the progressive realization of the right to access
to secure land and affordable housing for sustainable development at the same
catalyze the processes of implementation of the resolutions of the first
International Conference on Housing held in March 2019.

which is one of the organizations under Kisumu Governance Caucus which are
organizing the conference says some of the issues that will be discussed include
local physical and land use development plans as drivers of spatial justice for
sustainable land management, administration and use for a just and equitable
urban and cities growth.
Others include the Kenyan Land Policy and Legal Frameworks
and the interpretation of the right to land and emerging models of land ownership
in Kenya in comparison with other jurisdictions among other issues
Some Members of the Kisumu Governance Caucus include Kenya
Female Advisory Organization, Grass root Trust, Community Empowerment and Media Initiative in Kisumu{CEMI-K}, Transparency International, Transform
Empowerment for Action Initiative{TEAM} among others.
