Floods in Ksm have destroyed 1,756 acres of land worth shs 67.8M

 

Floods menace witnessed in Kisumu County has destroyed 1,756 acres of land with an estimated cost of sh 67.81 Million, Kisumu Governor has said.

 

Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o says the destruction of the farmlands and crops have occurred in the low-lying areas within the eight sub-counties of Kisumu County.

 

Addressing the press in Kisumu today to give a report on the flood situation in Kisumu County, Governor Nyong’o said some 2,000 livestock have been affected by the flood following the destruction of the pasture.

 

The Kisumu Governor says a total of 22 ECD schools within the county have too been affected by the floods and may not re-open on Monday next week.

 

He says the ECD schools are in the following sub-Counties Namely Kadibo 7, Nyando 3, Kisumu West 2, Kisumu East 5, Kisumu Central 1, Nyakach 1 and Seme 3.

 

“The floods have also destroyed a number of our roads and health facilities particularly in Nyando and Kadibo sub-counties. It has made these facilities inaccessible to both the staff and patients. We are doing all we can through the assistance of the national government and development partners to find remedies,” Nyong’o says.

 

Nyong’o says the floods which has been triggered by the water backflow from Lake Victoria and water from the swollen rivers have also affected 14,060 people across the eight sub-counties, adding that a case of one drowning has been reported in Muhoroni sub-county.

 

The Governor further says a total of 638 households from five sub-counties are currently at evacuation camps, adding that 2,178 households have been integrated with their relatives and well-wishers.

 

Nyong’o says as part of intervention, the County Government of Kisumu has purchased and distributed food and non-food items worth 4.8 million which has been distributed to the displaced families in Nyakach, Nyando, Kadibo and Seme.

 

“Our partners Kenya Red cross and UNICEF have distributed non-food items and dignity kits in Kadibo and Nyando sub-counties,” Nyong’o adds.

 

Nyong’o has appealed to well-wishers to come and help them assist the displaced families, adding that a donation center will be opened tomorrow at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Center.
