Call to build thriving Cities and urban areas

Counties have called for building a thriving Cities and Urban areas across the country.

The Council of Governors now says Cities and urban areas are engines of growth and innovation, but they also face complex challenges.

The Chairperson lands, Housing and Urban Development Committee at the Council of Governors in the Council of Governors Prof Anyang Nyong’o says there are a number of key areas when building thriving cities and urban areas across the country.

Speaking in Kisumu today during a meeting for building thriving cities and urban areas, Governor Nyong’o said infrastructure and sustainability is key and there is commitment to investing in clean energy, green building practices and resilient infrastructure.

Nyong’o who is also the Kisumu Governor says another one is affordable Housing and Transportation.

 He says the other one is Physical and Land Use Planning where there is commitment to prepare, approve and implement Physical and Land Use Plans.

“Economic Opportunity and Equity is another area and there is commitment from this meeting to creating inclusive economic opportunities, fostering innovation, and bridging the digital divide as well as  Liveable Municipalities and Cities where there is also commitment to prioritizing public health, safety, and social services to create vibrant communities,” Nyong’o says

Others also include Sustainable Development Goals with Commitments towards implementation, tracking and reporting on the progress of implementation through Voluntary Local Reviews.

Urban Financing: Pursue the National Government and Parliament to establish a National Urban Development Fund and Commit to ensuring the Cities, Municipalities and urban areas are funded by the County Governments as well as Human resource and staffing with commitment to engage my colleagues at the Council of Governors to recruit, engage, equip, and train professionals to support better governance of our urban areas.

The Chairperson lands, Housing and Urban Development Committee at the Council of Governors in the Council of Governors Prof Anyang Nyong’o says building thriving cities and urban areas requires collaboration with all the stakeholders.

“Partnerships across sectors: public, private, and civil society—are essential. We must leverage technology, embrace innovation, and demonstrate bold leadership for long-term success. Through shared experiences and collaboration, we can find innovative solutions and build a brighter future for all Kenyans,” Nyong’o says.
