Come up with a clear plan to re-open schools, Lawyer Mwamu urges Govt

The National Government have been asked to have a very clear plan for the re-opening of schools across the country after a long shut down due to Corona virus pandemic.

Former President of the East African Law Society Lawyer James Aggrey Mwamu says the Government should do this in order to allow parents to prepare adequately ahead of re-opening of schools across the country.

Addressing teachers of various schools in Kisumu East when he visited them to donate items through Mwalimu James Japheth Mwamu Foundation to help them in readiness for the re-opening, Mwamu said most parents have been greatly affected financially hence should be given a clear plan and enough time to prepare ahead of the re-opening.

Mwamu says it is not right at all to just re-open schools across the country and tell parents to pay schools fees which they don’t have at the moment without the Government having a clear plan on this.

“Clear plan will enable parents to prepare. We have had the issues of Corona and a number of families have been hit by the financial meltdown that has gone on in this country and just re-opening schools and ask parents to pay school fees when they have no money to pay is not right at all,” Mwamu says

Mwamu says the Cabinet Secretary in charge of the Ministry of Education Prof. George Magoha has been confusing Kenyans with the different dates he has been proposing on the reopening of schools across the country, adding that the official date of re-opening needs to be clear in a well laid down plan.

“There has been a lot of confusion on the issue of re-opening of schools across the country as different times have been given for example in July, September, October 2020 or January 2021.This needs to be clear in a policy from the Government,” Mwamu adds.

Mwamu suggested that the Government should now settle on January 2021 for the re-opening of schools across the country, adding that this will give everyone enough time to prepare.

“The ministry of education should make up its mind and set January 2021 as the month of re-opening schools as this will make people to prepare as children will be ready to go to school. It will also give teachers enough time to prepare to receive children in schools,” he further says.

He says schools needs to be prepared and the Government needs to provide funds for such preparations, adding that currently no funds have been available for such manner of preparations.
