Foundation donates items to schools in Kisumu as they await re-opening.
A NUMBER of Primary school in Kisumu County have received donations from a foundation to help them in preparedness ahead of the re-opening.
Mwalimu James Japheth Mwamu Foundation has donated items such as tanks for keeping water for hand washing, sanitizers and surgical face masks to a number of schools in Kisumu East Sub-county.
Addressing the press during the donation, Lawyer James Aggrey Mwamu from the Foundation said they are doing this in order to help schools to prepare for re-opening after the long closure due to the Corona virus.
Mwamu says schools needs to prepare for the re-opening which is still not known when it will happen, adding that the President said the issue of dealing with how schools will re-open is very important.
He says this move will surely help in preparing the schools in readiness for the re-opening, adding that the Government should adequately aid schools before the official re-opening date.
“The Government should see how schools get prepared so as to receive students when they re-opening. We have realized that there is very little being done by the Government in terms of helping schools to be ready for the re-opening,” Mwamu says.
Mwamu says a lot of energy should be put in place before schools re-open to ensure that things are in order after the learning institutions were closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mwamu who is also the Former President of the East Africa Law Society has asked Professionals and other business people to chip in and help in preparing the schools before re-opening.
He says even the safety of teachers who have been told to go back to schools to prepare them is very paramount.
“As the Ministry of Education is releasing teachers to go back to schools in readiness for the re-opening, their safety is very important and the Government should ensure that they have enough face masks and their welfare is fully taken into account,” Mwamu adds.
He says the Government should also ensure that the subordinate staffs are paid salaries so as to help in the preparations, adding that most of them have never been paid for the last seven months when the schools were closed as a result of the Corona virus.
During the donation, five primary schools benefitted namely Nyamasaria, Rae Kanyaika, Ragumo, Ofunyu and Renja.
Head teachers from the Primary schools who have benefitted from the donation have thanked the foundation for such a gesture terming it a good start for them in readiness to receive pupils when schools re-opens.
Renja Primary school Head Teacher John Otieno Ondeng’e says the foundation’s donation to schools is timely.
