Don’t engage in arson, Lawyer tells students

STUDENTS in various institutions of learning across the country have been urged not to engage in burning down the institutions.

President of Kisumu Boys High School Alumni Foundation James Aggrey Mwamu says cases of students in secondary schools burning some schools is very worrying only a few weeks after re-opening following the long holiday occasioned by the closure of schools countrywide last year in March.

Addressing the press in Kisumu after being re-elected as the President of Kisumu Boys High School Alumni Foundation, Mwamu said the issue of having a long holiday of about ten months due to Covid-19 pandemic is partly to blame for rise of cases of indiscipline among some students who have reported back to school.

He says it is not right to burn the schools and property of the students as this is termed as arson and is punishable by the law.

“If you are found guilty of arson, the minimum sentence is 14 years and if you are a student of about 20 years you will be freed from jail when you are 34 years old hence you shall have wasted a lot of time in jail for an offense which you could have avoided,” Mwamu says.

Mwamu urges parents to advice their sons and daughters not to engage in any acts of lawlessness whether in school or outside school.

Mwamu who is also a Former President of the East African Law Society further urged the teachers to tighten the issue of discipline in schools to help in upbringing responsible students.

He further urges students to behave well both in school and outside so that they get good recommendations while looking for certificate of good conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations after school, adding that those who engages in serious crimes while in schools will never get such important document from the Government.

Mwamu at the same time hinted that the Alumni Foundation is committed in ensuring that Kisumu Boys High school now known as Kisumu School get a major facelift and have modern structures.

He says among the projects the Alumni want to implement include putting up a perimeter wall, expanding classes to befit its National Status and constructing a new library among others.

“We want to equip library with good books and embrace online library technology which will help in boosting the current library at the school,” he adds.

Mwamu says the Alumni also intends to help in improving the academic standards of the school while collaborating with the school’s administration.

During the Election, James Aggrey Mwamu was elected to serve his second term as the President and Nancy Adotte elected as the Vice President.

Other elected leaders are Philip Oyoo as the Secretary, Ahmed Chodhri as the Treasurer, Mary Warinda Deputy Secretary and Derrick Kinyanji as the Organizing Secretary.
