New Terminus at Kisumu Railways station to be completed by April

The New Terminus for Kisumu Railways station will be completed by April this year, a committee inspecting National Government Projects has said.

The National Development Implementation Technical Committee (NDITC) which is in Kisumu to inspect ongoing National Government Projects says the new terminus for the Kisumu Railways station will replace the current one which is near the refurbished Kisumu Port.

Addressing the press within Kicomi area along Kisumu-Busia Road today where the new terminus will be constructed, the Chairman of the National Development Implementation Technical Committee Permanent Secretary in charge of ICT and Innovations Jerome Ochieng said there has been agreement that the terminus be relocated away from the refurbished Kisumu Port for security reasons.

The PS says the Committee will monitor the construction of the new terminus closely to ensure that it is completed within the stipulated time as well as other projects that are funded by the National Government across the country.

He says already the Committee has seen the plan for the project, adding that it will be completed within the next two months.

“As you may be aware that the port is a security zone where there should be no public moving in and out anyhow hence has necessitated the relocation of the Kisumu Railways Terminus which has been within the port to another area,” Ochieng says

The Committee has challenged the contractor at the site to do the work effectively and within the timelines provided so that the now being rehabilitated Kenya Railways line from Nakuru to Kisumu get functional by April.

Meanwhile, Members of the NDITC who are in the County to inspect ongoing National Government projects today paid a courtesy call on the Kisumu Governor Prof Peter Anyang Nyong’o.

The other members of the NDITC in the mission PS Solomon Kitungu of Infrastructure, Joe Okudo of Sports, Ali Noor of Cooperative Development and Alfred Cheruiyot of Skills Development.

The team leader says that they expect the Olkaria transmission line by the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company to be completed in two months and this will address the perennial power outages being experienced in Kisumu currently.

The Governor on his part expressed his satisfaction and confidence at the pace of implementation of the various projects including the dredging of the Lake which is expected to finally remove the stones left during the opening of the Mbita Causeway.

He said that he was looking forward to the expected launch of some of the projects planned for April this year.

The Governor further pointed out the need to fast track other planned projects such as the Special Economic Zone, Sunset Hotel - which is to be realized through a PPP arrangement in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and the privatization of the sugar industry.

While briefing the team, the Chairperson of the County Development Implementation Committee who is also the County Commissioner Madam Josephine Ouko confirmed that the government is currently implementing 78 projects worth 228 billion shillings in the region.
