Kisumu Governor orders for suspension 12 “rogue” Askaris who dragged a woman on tarmac road

KISUMU Governor Prof Peter Anyang Nyong’o has ordered for an immediate suspension of about 12 County Enforcement officers who have been caught in a viral video dragging a woman behind a moving pick-up in one of the streets in Kisumu yesterday.

Nyong’o in a statement to newsrooms has directed the Acting Kisumu City Manager Abala Wanga to immediately suspend the said officers from duty following the mishandling of a lady trader.

The Kisumu Governor says he has been saddened by the incident and such should never happened to any resident of Kisumu again.

“While away in Nairobi on official Council of Governors’ meetings I have been saddened and shocked by a very unfortunate incident in Kisumu, following the arrest and mishandling of a lady trader by the City's enforcement officers this Wednesday morning,” Nyong’o says in a press statement.

Nyong’o directed the Acting City Manager to accord the matter the urgency it deserves as investigations continues on it.

“As investigations continue on this matter with the urgency it deserves, I have directed the City Manager to immediately suspend from duty all the Officers who were involved in this incident with immediate effect, until the conclusion of the on-going probe on the matter,” Nyong’o adds

Nyong’o has further told all County enforcement officers that they must carry out their duties while fully respecting the human rights of the members of the public who should, in return, respect City Regulations and the Rule of Law.

“I will continue to update members of the public and our traders on this matter even as I wish the injured Lady a quick recovery,” the Governor further says.

Kisumu Governor’s action comes nearly a day after an incident where a clip of some Kisumu County Enforcement officers dragging a woman on a tarmac road sparked outrage from residents of Kisumu City.

In a clip where a woman is seen hanging behind a speeding pick-up with her lower limb on the tarmac and boda boda riders giving a chase to the vehicle, members of the public termed the incident very uncouth and tormenting indeed.

The trader who has identified herself as Beatrice Magolo said she was heading to the Kisumu Main Bus Terminus when the County Enforcement officers pounced on her forcing to aboard their pick-up.
