Expert says there is
need to invest in four key areas of the water sector
THERE is serious need to invest in key four areas in the
water sector across the country, an expert in the water, Sanitation and hygiene
has said.
Head of Programs at the Kenya Water and Sanitation Civil
Society Network {Kewasnet} Vincent Ouma says it is very vital to invest on the
four key areas in the water sector namely Water Resource management, Water
Service Provision, Sanitation and hygiene.
Addressing a two day meeting to orient the media
professional from Western Kenya region to the water sector, Kewasnet Head of Programs said these are key areas which must be invested in a very smart way by
various stakeholders.
“These four areas are very important because the water
needed must come from somewhere and it must be managed properly hence being
taken to somewhere for use through the water service providers,” he says
Ouma says there is need to invest in smart ways in the water
resources management and in development of infrastructure in the water Sector that
helps in bringing water closer to the people.
He says the public wants to be sure that the water they are
provided is safe for consumption within their houses where they stay.
Ouma says that the people also needs to be sure that they access
sanitation facilities so that they don’t end up polluting the same water they
are using, adding that access to hygiene is also key.
The Head of Programs further says Kiwasnet believes in the
issue of good Governance in the water sector, adding that the network's duty is
to ensure that the communities have access to sustainable water and proper
sanitation services in the near future in Kenya.
“We have a mission of improving governance in the water
sector because we believe that if this is done then there will be access of
services by the Community,” he adds.
He says Kenya still remain a water scarce producing country
because the production of the water resources is at 527Cubic meters per annum,
adding that the country should be at 1,000 cubic meters per annum.
