Kisumu prepares
for 9th Kicosca games due next month
The County
government of Kisumu is in top gears as it launched massive preparations to
host the 9th edition of the Inter-counties Sports and Cultural
Association.
An Organizing
Committee headed by the County Secretary, John Auma is supervising preparations
of competition venues and institutions that will accommodate delegates from
various counties.
The games
start from January 15, 2023 and will feature 21 sports events that includes
Golf, soccer and choirs.
“We are
ready to host the games. It is a great honour to host 46 Counties here in
Kisumu. We have started sprucing up the venues for the games. We want it to be
the best ever Kicosca derby ever held since its inception in 2013,” Auma says.
Kisumu
governor, Prof Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o who is the new games’ Patron, has directed the local Organizing
Committee to be holding daily meetings to ensure everything go as planned.
The County
Secretary says the County and national officials involved in the preparations
were working in consultations with the National Organizing Committee.
The team this
weekend held its meeting at the Moi stadium which will be one of the venues.
Before the
onset of Devolution, the Kicosca games was known as the Kenya
Inter-Municipality Sports and Cultural Association (KIMSCA).
Nairobi
County held the first edition in 2013, followed by Nakuru in 2014 and Uasin Gishu
in 2015.
Other
Counties that have hosted the games are Kiambu in 2016, Machakos in 2017, Kisii
in 2018, Kericho in 2020 and Embu in 2021.
The games were not held in 2019.
The Kicosca
games normally precede the East Africa Local Authority Sports and Cultural
Association (EALASCA) which as first held in 2009 in Kenya in Machakos town.
Kenya again
hosted the regional sports extravaganza in Kisumu in 2016.
The Kicosca
games is managed by the national Executive committee with Peter Ogalo of Kiambu
County as the Chairman.
In last
year’s games, Nairobi County emerged overall winners with Kisumu finishing in
position two while Uasin Gishu was ranked third.
Nairobi will
also be defending her Athletics title while Kisumu will be relying on the
Deputy Governor Mathew Owili to defend the Golf title. Embu is the defending
soccer champions.
Games
officials said 27 Counties had confirmed participation by close of last week
and more were expected to send their names.
