Call for prosecution of culprits who burnt Nyando Social Justice Center as it is re-launched

Human Rights Defenders in Kisumu have renewed calls for the arrest and prosecutions of a section of police officers from Ahero Police station who allegedly burnt down the offices of Nyando Socia  Justice Center last year in June.

Led by a Human Rights Defender Boniface Akatch, the Human Rights Defenders said there is no need to only transfer the police officers suspected of carrying out an arson attack to the Nyando Social Justice Center last year in June during the anti-Government demonstration.

Addressing the gathering during the re-launch of the Nyando Social Justice Center Opposite Ahero Police station, Akatch has asked the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to ensure that those who were behind the arson are apprehended and charged before court.

Akatch says what happened is uncalled for and the perpetrators must face full force of the law.

“We ask the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to ensure that those who performed the act of burning the offices of Nyando Social Justice office be brought to book and face  the law. The police officers who were involved should never be transferred to go and commit such an act elsewhere again,” Akatch says.

Director of Public Prosecutions Reni Igonga who was the chief guest during the re-launch of the center today said the Center play a pivotal role in protecting and defending human rights hence its re-launch is of great significance.

He says quest for social justice must continue and should be for all, adding all should access social justice whenever they need assistance on this.

He says his office will continue to work closely with various stakeholders to offer quality services required by the public.

Carren Omanga, the convener of the Nyando Social Justice Center says it is a milestone to re-launch the center through the support from Amnesty International.

Omanga says Amnesty International has supported the center to re-established it at shs 2Million.

She says the new office has three rooms comprising of Computer rooms, Reception and the Counselling room.

Omanga has further appealed to the Ahero Police Fraternity to come and work as a stakeholder on issues of social Justice.
